From Fibre to Future: Choosing Natural Over Plastic

From Fibre to Future: Choosing Natural Over Plastic

At DEPLOY, every design decision is an opportunity to care—for you, for the people who make your clothes, and for the planet that provides the resources we so often take for granted. To mark Plastic Free July, we’re spotlighting an often-overlooked source of pollution: our wardrobes.

The Hidden Hazard of Plastics

Synthetic fibres like polyester, nylon, and acrylic dominate the clothing marketplace and are all derived from fossil fuels. Valued for their price competitiveness and ‘performance’ (e.g. shimmer, wrinkle-free, or stain-resistant), their true impact is far from benign. They require toxic synthetic dyes that are impossible to break down, shed microplastics with every wash, and are non-recyclable in blends—taking over 200 years to decompose or are incinerated, both processes releasing toxic gases into the air, soil, and waterways. This pollutes our food chain, degrades ecosystems, and poses serious risks to both environmental and human health.

Plastic-Free Clothing

Guided by our 360° Sustainability Compass, DEPLOY chooses natural over synthetic, with 90% of our collection made from 100% natural fibres—from Detox, organic, and regeneratively-farmed cottons to silks, linens and wools. Sourced from environmentally certified suppliers, these fabrics maintain quality and appeal, while offering attributes that regulate body temperature, odour, and moisture. They’re naturally breathable, hypoallergenic, and biodegradable. We also steer clear of PFAS and other ‘forever chemicals’ often applied to synthetics, which research shows cause skin irritation and chronic disease. Our garments are designed to enhance timelessness and longevity in style and use, supporting your comfort and wellbeing—as well as the health of workers and the planet.

Planet-Care Packaging

Furthermore, we’ve migrated from plastic to packaging made from plant-based agricultural waste, such as sugarcane, which breaks down within 6–10 weeks under industrial composting.

Naturally Sustainable Shopping

Plastic pollution from fashion is endemic—now found in our air, food, rivers, oceans, and even our bodies. While policy change is critical, we each play a role. Today, we invite you to reconsider every wardrobe purchase—not just by how it looks, but by what it’s made of. Go natural. Because what touches your skin, touches the planet.
