"Mr. Joshua Pan, Founder/Principle Partner of international architecture & planning firm JJP, and Dr. Bernice Pan, Founder/Chief Creative Officer of DEPLOY, a pioneering British sustainable fashion brand are in different industries but they share the "human-centric" philosophy of designing for social change — making the world a better place by caring for people.
Joshua, who founded his eponymous architecture firm in 1981, was the first Taiwanese architect to be awarded Fellow of the American Association of Architects (#FAIA), and received Taiwan's highest honour of the National Arts Award. His daughter, Dr. Bernice Pan, established DEPLOY in London in 2006 & has been named Sustainable Entrepreneur of 2020, and was a finalist of the Asian Women of Achievement Award. DEPLOY earned its #BCorp business certification in 2022 with one of the highest scores ever recorded (149.5).
Both father & daughter share the belief in a "human-centric" design philosophy, turning away from the convention that design is made by wealth and for luxury. “Self-confidence comes from conscience and cannot be measured by pricing structure,” said Mr. Pan. Bernice echoes this sentiment and takes it further, “Design must, by nature, have a purpose, whether a building or clothing. If it is not useful or does not serve as an improvement, then it is a waste of both human & environmental resources” says Bernice.
